SECOND LARGEST CACAO PRODUCER IN THE WORLD

Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea and has played a significant role in the cacao trade for many years now. Ghana is now the world’s second largest cacao producer and cacao is the nation’s largest agricultural export. Around 800,000 farming families acquire a livelihood from farming cacao and its associated activities. The cacao plant was introduced to Ghana at the beginning of the 19th century by Swiss missionaries, however commercial farming is credited to a Ghanaian blacksmith named Tetteh Quarshie, who spent several years living on the island of Bioko (then called Fernando Po). On his return to Ghana in 1879 he brought the Amelonado cacao pod back with him and subsequently founded the first cacao farm in the Eastern Region in South Ghana. This farm in due course became a tree nursery, where farmers acquired saplings for their farms and from there, cacao farming spread to all the forested areas in the country and it now established as one of the most widely used crops in the country.

STATE CONTROL THROUGH THE COCOA BOARD

The cacao trade has had a tumultuous history and has played its part in shaping the country with for example example, low cacao prices causing strikes in the 1930s. The Ghanaian government founded the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in 1947, which controls the cacao market by setting the price for cacao and is responsible for exporting the raw material.
